Most Interesting Google Searches During the Super Bowl

Last night was the lowest scoring most boring Super Bowl in the history of forever. Seriously. Between the ho-hum plays and the year’s most anticipated commercial breaks, a lot of us took to our phones for some kind of entertainment. If you had to Google “Who is Big Boi?” or “How old is Jared Goff?” you are not alone. Here’s what else the rest of the country was searching last night during the big game.

  • Autocorrect was not doing us any favors last night. Searches for “Superb Owl” (which still lands you in the correct place, in case you were wondering) hit a record high around game time.
  • Our appetizer preferences differed vastly by state, with Marylanders googling the very original concept of “pizza recipes,” while Massachusettsans preferred to peruse “gluten free pretzel recipes.” New Mexico searched for “pea and peppercorn mash,” which sounds (and looks) a little bit like a runnier, greener guacamole.
  • The term “killer skin” peaked at 6:28 p.m. (EST), as Sarah Michelle Gellar and Olay teamed up to reboot her role in horror classics. Since only 20% of Super Bowl commercials are marketed towards women, it was nice to see we care about something besides which laundry detergent our family prefers.
  • “Coach Lynn” dominated results both times the touching Verizon commercial aired, at 8:44 p.m. and 10:12 p.m., along with searches such as “Coach Lynn first responders” and “allourthanks.com.” It was a much needed dose of let-us-always-remember-what-a-hero-is whilst watching this grand annual spectacle.
  • At 8:12 p.m., after the mini OutKast revival, thousands of us searched YouTube to listen to the full version of “The Way You Move.” You know you did too.
  • Our first glimpse at MVP Julian Edelman without his helmet happened during the award ceremony and...you guessed it...“Julian Edelman without beard” spiked at 10:28 p.m. (This is a sign, Julian. Shave it.)
  • Bostonians prepared to continue their Super Bowl Sunday celebration into Monday as “excuses for being late to work” spiked at 5:48 a.m. While prying their eyelids open and brushing their teeth, they searched “hangover cures” at 6:08 a.m.

What does all this mean? Nothing, really. We are fascinating creatures and our minds all work differently. But we all like information. And are always craving more, more, more. Especially when we are bored to tears watching the most anticipated event of the year!
