Employee Value Proposition campaign recognized for elevating employee storytelling through portrait photography

Baltimore, July 9, 2026—Mission, a Baltimore-based brand marketing and advertising agency, is proud to announce that its collaborative work with Johns Hopkins University and Morton Works has been recognized with a Gold 2026 CASE Circle of Excellence Award for Photography | Portraits, a key element in “The Individuals Who Fuel Johns Hopkins,” an employee value proposition (EVP) portrait campaign that reimagined how one of the world’s leading institutions tells its employer brand story. The CASE Circle of Excellence Awards recognize outstanding achievement in advancement, communications, marketing and alumni relations among educational institutions worldwide.

Created in partnership with Johns Hopkins University Communications, Mission led strategy and creative direction alongside Director of Photography Lee Morton and his team from Morton Works, whose portrait photography brought the work to life. The photography was used to craft a unifying campaign that celebrates real employee voices and experiences across Johns Hopkins.

Rather than relying on institutional accolades or traditional recruitment messaging, the campaign focused on real stories of staff, researchers and employees across the university and health system. Drawing from bold editorial design, the creative direction positioned each employee as the hero of the story—using expressive portraiture, personalized superlatives and authentic narrative pull quotes to celebrate the individuals behind one of the world’s leading institutions. The result was a fresh, human-centered employer brand that reflected Johns Hopkins’ culture from the inside out while creating a flexible creative framework that continues to support recruitment, internal communications, and employee recognition across the university.

“The best creative partnerships are built on trust, and that’s exactly what made this work so special. From the outset, Lee and his team at Morton Works approached every portrait with a shared belief that the people in front of the camera deserved to be the heroes of the story. That collaboration allowed us to create something that felt original, beautifully crafted and true to the Johns Hopkins community. We’re incredibly proud to see the work recognized by CASE.”

The creative approach intentionally placed employees at the forefront. Portraits were captured in true working environments with a bright, approachable visual style that balanced editorial quality with genuine emotion. Designed as a modular system, the photography can be adapted across dozens of applications while maintaining a consistent identity, allowing the campaign to continue evolving over time.

“From the very beginning, we wanted every portrait to feel like a conversation rather than a photoshoot,” said Lee Morton, Founder of Morton Works. “The thing about heroes is that they often don’t want the spotlight. So we focused on holding space for each person to feel comfortable, natural, and fully themselves. We wanted the portraits to feel less like a formal setup and more like a conversation. Natural, grounded and human. That’s what makes this work resonate.”

The overall campaign grew out of a comprehensive employee value proposition initiative that explored the experiences, motivations and aspirations of employees across Johns Hopkins. Those insights informed a messaging framework grounded in a simple belief: the most compelling recruitment message is the human one. By aligning employee stories with recruitment strategy, the campaign helped create an employer brand that reflects how employees experience Johns Hopkins from the inside out.

“This recognition belongs to the employees who trusted us with their stories,” said Len Turner, Director of Multimedia Strategy at Johns Hopkins University. “Their authenticity is what makes this campaign so powerful. We’re grateful to Mission and Morton Works for helping us create a body of work that not only supports recruitment, but celebrates the people who fuel Johns Hopkins every day.”
